Pregnancy and Postpartum Support

Pregnancy and the period following childbirth place real and changing demands on a person. Acupuncture can be supportive during this time by helping address common physical discomforts while promoting relaxation, balance, and recovery.

At Intown Acupuncture, pregnancy and postpartum care is approached thoughtfully and conservatively, with attention to timing, presentation, and individual needs. Support is offered in a way that works with these transitions rather than overriding them.

Treatment by our practitioners is shaped by experience and attention to how needs shift across pregnancy, birth, and recovery.

Can acupuncture treatment make pregnancy more comfortable?

Acupuncture has a long history of supporting comfort and function during pregnancy. Care may be helpful at any stage, from early pregnancy through the weeks leading up to birth, depending on individual circumstances.

Care is adapted to gestational stage and presentation, with close attention to safety and appropriateness throughout pregnancy.

Common concerns addressed during pregnancy include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Constipation
  • Reflux
  • Headache
  • Back, hip, or rib pain
  • Carpal tunnel symptoms
  • Swelling and fluid retention
  • Anxiety or low mood

Pre-Birth Acupuncture Program

Intown Acupuncture offers a Pre-Birth Acupuncture Program for clients between approximately 35 and 40 weeks of pregnancy. This series typically includes two or three treatments focused on comfort, rest, and preparation for labor.

This program is led by Jim Gordon, Lic.Ac., who serves as the primary practitioner for pregnancy and pre-birth acupuncture at the clinic.

In coordination with OB or midwifery care, care may also be used to support concerns such as:

• Breech presentation
• Cervical readiness
• Prolonged early labor
• Labor preparation for post-dates pregnancies
• Support for VBAC

Postpartum Support

Childbirth — whether vaginal or cesarean — is a significant physiological event. The postpartum period often involves a gradual process of recalibration as a person recovers and adjusts.

Acupuncture may be helpful when recovery feels prolonged or uneven, or when symptoms persist beyond the early weeks postpartum.

Common postpartum concerns include:

• Significant or persistent fatigue
• Pain or slow physical recovery
• Digestive disruption
• Headaches
• Insomnia or disrupted sleep
• Changes in breast milk supply
• Recurrent blocked ducts or mastitis

Acupuncture may also be included as part of a broader care plan for postpartum depression or anxiety, though it is not intended as a stand-alone primary treatment.
